Elevate Your Table: The Charming Farmhouse Crochet Placemats Pattern

Welcome, creative friends! Are you ready to transform your dining space with handmade charm? Today, we’re diving into a delightful project that will add warmth and texture to any mealtime: the Farmhouse Crochet Placemats. These beautiful placemats are not just practical; they’re a statement piece, perfect for gifting, selling at markets, or simply enhancing your own home decor.

The Beloved Farmhouse Collection: Our Inspiration

This project is the fourth delightful addition to our beloved Farmhouse Collection, a series that began with our popular pot holder pattern in 2019. Since then, we’ve expanded with highly cherished coasters and a dish set, which has become one of our most downloaded crochet patterns ever. We’ve long desired to grow this collection, drawn to its unique stitches and comforting textures. Each piece embodies a rustic elegance that’s both stunning and surprisingly easy to create.

The Farmhouse Placemat: Customizable Beauty for Your Space

Our Farmhouse Crochet Placemats measure approximately 18 inches by 12 inches, providing ample space for your place settings. However, one of the best features of this design is its complete adjustability. You can easily modify the pattern to create crochet placemats of any size, perfectly tailored to your table or project needs.

In this guide, we’ll craft a charming two-toned placemat, featuring a warm burnt orange as the main color and a creamy white for the border. But the design possibilities are endless:

  • Solid Color: For a minimalist and cohesive look.
  • Stripes: Add a playful or modern touch with multiple color changes.
  • Holiday Themes: Match your placemats to seasonal decor with festive reds, greens, or pastels.
  • Neutrals: Opt for timeless creams, grays, or browns for everyday elegance.

Materials You’ll Need to Create Your Crochet Placemats

Before we begin, gather your supplies. To ensure your finished crochet placemats are perfect, checking your gauge is always a good idea. You can adjust your hook size up or down to achieve the correct gauge.

  • Yarn: Medium (4) weight cotton yarn. For a two-toned placemat as featured, you’ll need approximately:
    • 167 yards of your main color (Color A) – WeCrochet Dishie in Sunbaked recommended.
    • 54 yards of your border color (Color B) – WeCrochet Dishie in Swan recommended.
    • If making a solid color placemat, you’ll need about 221 yards total.
  • Crochet Hook: 5 mm (H)
  • Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends.
  • Scissors:

Mastering the Even Moss Stitch: Step-by-Step for Your Crochet Placemats

Gauge Check:

To ensure your placemat is the correct size, it’s always a good idea to test your gauge before starting. Adjust your hook size up or down as needed to match the pattern’s specified gauge.

Starting the Foundation Chain:

With Color A (your main color), create a slip knot on your hook. Chain 56. Remember to keep your chain stitches loose, as you’ll be working back into them in the next row. If you wish to adjust the length of your crochet placemats, simply chain any even number until you reach your desired length.

Row 1: Introducing the Even Moss Stitch

Now, we’ll work back into your foundation chain.

  1. Slip Stitch: Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch. Try to keep your slip stitches loose to make working into them easier later.
  2. Half Double Crochet: In the very next chain, work a half double crochet stitch. (Yarn over, insert hook into chain, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all three loops on hook.)
  3. Repeat: Continue this sequence across the entire row: slip stitch into the next chain, then half double crochet into the following chain. This alternating pattern creates the beautiful Even Moss Stitch texture.
  4. End of Row 1: Your last stitch of the row will be a slip stitch. At the end of Row 1, you should have 55 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Rows 2-40: Continuing the Even Moss Stitch Pattern

For Rows 2 and onwards, you’ll continue the Even Moss Stitch pattern established in Row 1.

  1. Slip Stitch: Slip stitch into the first stitch of the row.
  2. Half Double Crochet: Half double crochet into the next stitch.
  3. Repeat: Continue alternating slip stitch in the next, then half double crochet in the following stitch, ending each row with a slip stitch.

Important Note on Loops: When working your stitches, ensure you’re working into the top two loops of the stitch. A half double crochet stitch has a third loop on the front; this front loop is what creates the unique ribbing and texture of these crochet placemats. Do not work into this front loop; only work into the top two loops as you normally would.

Repeat Row 2 until you reach the end of Row 40, or until your placemat reaches your desired width. Remember to chain 1 and turn at the end of each row.

Adding the Perfect Finish: The Border for Your Crochet Placemats

As you complete the last slip stitch of Row 40, it’s time to introduce Color B for the border. If you’re not changing colors, simply finish the stitch as normal.

To change colors: Insert your hook into the last stitch, drop Color A, grab Color B, and pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook. With Color B, chain 1. You can now cut Color A. You can either weave in the tail ends or work around them as you create the border.

Round 1: Single Crochet Border

We’ll now work a single crochet border around the entire placemat.

  • Corners: Work three single crochet stitches into each corner to create a neat, rounded edge.
  • Sides: Work one single crochet into the edge of each row down the sides. (Hint: There are two rows between each ribbing formed by the front loops, so you’ll generally place two single crochets between these prominent ribbings.)
  • Top & Bottom: Work one single crochet into each stitch across the top and bottom edges.

Start in the same stitch where you joined the new color (your last slip stitch of the main body) and work your first three single crochets for the first corner. Continue around the placemat following the guidelines above.

When you reach the end of Round 1, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first single crochet and chain 1.

Round 2: Half Double Crochet Border

For Round 2, we’ll work half double crochets around the placemat.

  • Stitches: Work one half double crochet into each stitch around.
  • Corners: In each corner, work three half double crochets into the center stitch of the three single crochets from the previous round.

Start with one half double crochet into the first stitch. The next stitch will be the center stitch from your previous corner, so work three half double crochets into it. Continue around, joining with a slip stitch to the top of the first half double crochet at the end of the round, then chain 1.

Round 3: The Unique Crab Stitch Border (Reverse Single Crochet)

Our final border round uses a truly unique and fun stitch: the Crab Stitch, also known as the Reverse Single Crochet. As the name suggests, instead of working counter-clockwise to the left, you’ll be working clockwise to the right. This creates a wonderful twisted effect!

  • No Increases: For this round, we will not be increasing in the corners. Work one crab stitch into each stitch around the entire placemat.
  • How to Crab Stitch: Start by working into the top of the last half double crochet stitch you just made (not where you joined). Insert your hook into that stitch behind you (to the right), pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops on your hook.

Continue working one crab stitch into each stitch around, moving to the right. This unique border adds a beautiful, finished look to your crochet placemats.

When you reach the end of Round 3, instead of joining to the top of the first stitch, slip stitch into the same space that the first crab stitch was worked into (just to the left of it). This helps to hide the joint seamlessly. Cut your yarn and pull your hook through to fasten off. Weave in any remaining ends, and your stunning Farmhouse Crochet Placemats are complete!

Caring for Your Handmade Crochet Placemats

To ensure your beautiful crochet placemats last for years to come, proper care is essential:

  • Washing: Most cotton placemats can be machine washed on a gentle cycle with cold water. Use a mild detergent.
  • Drying: For best results, air dry flat to maintain their shape. If using a dryer, tumble dry on low heat, but be aware it might cause some shrinkage.
  • Stain Treatment: Treat any stains promptly by spot cleaning with a gentle cleaner before washing.
