Seahorse Body (Worked from Top to Bottom)

Let’s start crocheting our cute seahorse! We begin from the head and work our way down to the tail.

Round 1: Make 6 single crochets (sc) in a Magic Ring (MR). (6 stitches)

Round 2: Increase (inc) in each stitch around. (12 stitches)

Round 3: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. (12 stitches)

Creating the Snout and Eyes

Round 4: Work 4 sc, then make the snout by working 5 double crochets (dc) into the next stitch with a common top (this creates a bobble/puff stitch), then sc in the remaining 7 stitches. (12 stitches)

Insert safety eyes (7 mm) between Round 3 and Round 4, roughly above where the snout starts.

Shaping the Body

Round 5: (1 sc, then decrease (dec)) repeat 4 times. (8 stitches)

Round 6: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. (8 stitches)

Round 7 (FLO): Working in the Front Loops Only, (1 sc, then increase (inc)) repeat 4 times. (12 stitches)

Adding the Fins

Round 8: Work 4 sc. Now, let’s make the first fin: chain 2 (ch 2), then work 4 sc into the 2nd chain from your hook (all into that one chain). Chain 1 (ch 1), then slip stitch (sl st) back into the body in the next available stitch. Continue with 5 sc along the body. Make the second fin using the same technique: ch 2, 4 sc into the 2nd chain from hook, ch 1, sl st into body. Finish the round with 3 sc. (12 stitches in the body, plus the fins)

Beginning the Tail

Round 9-10: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch around for 2 rows. (12 stitches)

After Round 10, make 1 offset stitch (sl st) if needed, to align your rounds. At this stage, begin to stuff the head and upper body firmly with fiberfill. No further stuffing will be needed as we shape the tail.

Round 11: Work 3 sc, then 3 decreases (dec), then 3 sc. (9 stitches)

Round 12: Work 2 sc, then 2 decreases (dec), then 2 sc. (7 stitches)

Round 13: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. (7 stitches)

Round 14: Decrease (dec), then 3 sc, then decrease (dec). (5 stitches)

Round 15-19: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch around for 5 rows. (5 stitches)

Finishing the Tail: Once you complete Round 19, cut your yarn, leaving a long tail. Close the remaining stitches using a tapestry needle. Weave the yarn through the front loop of each remaining stitch, pull tight to close, and knot securely. Weave in any loose ends.

Adding the Spikes

The spikes are crocheted from bottom to top, creating a lovely ridge along the seahorse’s back.

  1. Attach your contrasting color yarn to the lower part of the tail, at the back seam.
  2. Carefully crochet along the back of the seahorse, all the way up to the head.
  3. Repeat the sequence: hdc inc (half double crochet increase), followed by a sl st (slip stitch) into the next stitch. Continue this pattern along the back.
  4. Once you reach the head, fasten off and weave in any remaining ends.

Final Touches

  • Gently curl the tail of your seahorse. You can use a dab of fabric glue or a few small stitches to sew the curled tail in place, giving it that characteristic seahorse pose.
  • Attach a keychain ring if desired!

Congratulations! Your adorable Amigurumi Seahorse is now complete!
