Zebra Body Color Changes
For the zebra’s striped body, you will alternate colors in each round. Make sure to change colors by pulling through the new color on the last yarn over of the stitch before the color change. Carry the unused yarn loosely on the inside of your work.
Follow this order:
- Round 1: Black
- Round 2: White
- Round 3: Black
- Round 4: White
- Round 5: Black
- Round 6: White
- Round 7: Black
- Round 8: White
- Round 9: Black
- Round 10: White
Ear
Using your chosen ear color (main body color or contrasting):
Join yarn in one stitch of the 8th round of the body. In that single stitch, crochet the following sequence:
1 sc, 1 hdc, (Chain 2, then from the 2nd chain from hook: 1 sl st), 1 hdc, 1 sc.
Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave in any loose ends.
Mane
Using your chosen fluffy yarn for the mane:
Join the fluffy yarn between the ears on the top of the head. Crochet 7 sc stitches along the top of the head towards the tail to form the mane.
Cut the yarn and fasten off. Hide the ends securely within the work.
Horn (For the Unicorn)
Using thin yellow yarn:
Join the yellow yarn next to the mane, on the forehead area.
Chain 4. Then, starting from the second chain from the hook, work: 1 sc, 2 hdc along the chain of chains.
Fasten off with a sl st into the head to secure the horn. Cut the yarn and weave in any ends.
Finishing Touches
- Glue the 8mm eyes onto the white “BS” area (the snout/muzzle area). If using safety eyes, insert them before completely closing the body, typically positioning them between rounds 7-8 for good placement.
- Using black thin yarn, embroider small nostrils and expressive eyebrows onto the face.
- Create a small “tassel” on the tail using fluffy yarn for extra charm.
- Decorate your horse, zebra, or unicorn as desired! You can add small details like crocheted flowers, or use pink plush yarn for subtle rosy cheeks.
