Crochet Angel Ray: Free Big-Eyed Pattern!

Materials and Tools

  • Plush yarn in black, white, and orange, 100 gr./120 m. (e.g., Wolans Banny Baby colors 01, 63, 42, 40)
  • White faux fur yarn for hair (e.g., “Vyaz Mehovaya” and/or Himalaya Koala)
  • Glue-on eyes: 8 mm or 10 mm
  • Fiberfill (sintepuh) for stuffing
  • Crochet hook: 3 mm – 3.5 mm (Author uses Clover 3.25 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Glue for attaching eyes (e.g., “Moment Gel”)
  • Tapestry needle or darning needle for closing openings
  • Eyelashes (a small piece, optional)
  • Gold chenille wire for halo (optional)

Abbreviations

  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • PS: puff stitch (4 hdc with a shared top in one stitch)
  • ch: chain stitch
  • MR: magic ring
  • BLO: back loop only
  • dtr: double treble crochet

Important Color Notes:

  • Blue text indicates crocheting with white, textured/faux fur yarn.
  • Yellow text indicates crocheting with skin-colored yarn.

Body

Start crocheting the body from bottom to top. Begin with dark green yarn.

Do not cut the white yarn.

Change to skin-colored yarn.

  1. BLO: 18 sc (18)
  2. 9 sc, PS, 8 sc (18)
  3. 8 sc, PS in white, 1 sc, PS in white, 7 sc (18)

Cut and secure the white and skin-colored yarn.

Change yarn to white, textured.

  1. 18 sc (18)
  2. (1 sc, dec)*6 (12)

Stuff firmly with fiberfill.

  1. 6 dec

Cut the yarn and secure. Cinch the opening closed with a tapestry needle.

Wings

Right Wing

Crochet with white, plush yarn.

Attach yarn between rows 3 and 4 on the right side (with the toy’s back and side facing you).

Crochet from bottom to top:

(In one stitch: ch, 1 sc, hdc), (In one stitch: 2 dc, 1 dtr, ch 3, starting from 2nd chain from hook 2 sl st, ch 2, sl st into base.)

Cut the yarn and secure.

Left Wing

Crochet with white, plush yarn.

Attach yarn between rows 4 and 5 on the left side (with the toy’s back and side facing you).

Crochet from top to bottom:

In one stitch: ch 6, starting from 2nd chain from hook: 2 sl st, 1 dtr, 2 dc, (In one stitch: 1 hdc, sc, sl st).

Cut the yarn and secure.

Assembly

  • Glue eyes onto the white PS (puff stitches) on the head.
  • If there’s an opening between the white PS, carefully pull it closed with a thin thread.
  • Optionally, glue on eyelashes for extra charm.
  • Make a halo from gold chenille wire (optional) and attach it to the head.
