Introduction
This detailed pattern guides you through creating charming and colorful plush pills or capsules. These small, whimsical amigurumi pieces are perfect for adding a touch of cuteness to any collection or as a unique handmade gift. Follow these instructions carefully to bring your own “magic pills” to life!
Materials
- Plush Yarn: Approximately 120 meters (or 100 grams) of plush yarn. Choose white for the main body and any desired vibrant color(s) for the capsule section.
- Crochet Hook: A 3.5 mm to 4 mm crochet hook. The exact size may vary slightly based on your personal tension to achieve a firm fabric that prevents stuffing from showing through.
- Stuffing Material: Polyester fiberfill or any suitable stuffing material to firmly fill your crocheted piece.
- Half-Bead Eyes: Two (2) 8 mm half-bead eyes for each pill. These are typically glued on.
- Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends and embroidering details.
- Embroidery Floss/Thin Yarn: Small amounts of black or dark colored yarn/floss for embroidering eyebrows and mouth, and red for the cross detail.
- Fabric Glue: A strong fabric or craft glue suitable for attaching the half-bead eyes.
- Scissors: For cutting yarn.
Abbreviations
- sc: Single Crochet
- inc: Increase (work 2 single crochets into the same stitch)
- dec: Decrease (single crochet 2 together, typically an invisible decrease for a neater finish)
- Bobble stitch: Work 3 unfinished double crochets into one stitch, then yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook to join them at the top.
Crochet Pattern Instructions
This pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise specified. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round.
Start crocheting with white yarn for the top section of the pill.
- Round 1:
- Create a magic ring and work 6 single crochets (sc) into the ring. Pull the tail tight to close the ring. (6 stitches)
- Round 2:
- Work 6 increases (inc) around. This means 2 sc in each stitch from the previous round. (12 stitches)
- Rounds 3-6:
- Work 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch around for 4 consecutive rounds. Your piece will start to form a cylindrical shape. (12 stitches per round for a total of 4 rounds)
Change yarn color to your desired color for the main body of the pill (e.g., blue, pink, green).
- Rounds 7-8:
- Work 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch around for 2 consecutive rounds using the new color. (12 stitches per round for a total of 2 rounds)
- Round 9:
- Work 5 single crochets (sc), then work 2 Bobble stitches, then finish with 5 single crochets (sc).
(To make a Bobble stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops (first unfinished dc). Repeat 2 more times in the same stitch. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.)
(12 stitches) - Round 10:
- Work 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
Stuff the piece firmly using your chosen stuffing material. Ensure an even fill to maintain the pill’s shape.
- Round 11:
- Work 6 decreases (dec) around. This means single crochet 2 stitches together for a total of 6 times. (6 stitches)
Finishing
After completing Round 11, cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approximately 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) for closing. Thread this tail onto your yarn needle. Insert the needle through the front loop of each remaining stitch from Round 11. Once all 6 loops are on your needle, pull the yarn tail tightly to close the opening completely. Weave in the remaining yarn end securely into the plushie to hide it.
Finishing Touches
Once your crocheted pill is complete and closed, it’s time to add the adorable facial features and signature cross:
- Eyes: Carefully glue on the 8mm half-bead eyes. Position them on the colored section of the pill, typically centered above the Bobble stitches, which represent the “cheeks” or side bumps. Allow ample time for the glue to dry completely.
- Eyebrows and Mouth: Using black or dark-colored embroidery floss or thin yarn, embroider small, expressive eyebrows above the eyes and a small, simple mouth below them. Use a satin stitch or back stitch for clear lines.
- Red Cross: On the white section of the pill, using red embroidery floss or thin yarn, embroider a small, distinct red cross. This is typically placed on the front, opposite the face.
