Welcome to our festive crochet project! Get ready to create an adorable little Christmas tree gnome, perfect for adding a touch of handmade charm to your holiday decor. This gnome measures approximately 10cm tall.
Let’s Get Started!
1. Hat (Using your chosen hat color yarn)
We’ll start by making the gnome’s cozy hat. This is worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round.
- Round 1: Make 6 sc into a MR. [6 sc]
- Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. [12 sc]
- Round 3-4: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [12 sc]
- Round 5: (1 sc, inc) * 6 times. [18 sc]
- Round 6-7: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [18 sc]
- Round 8: (2 sc, inc) * 6 times. [24 sc]
- Round 9-10: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [24 sc]
- Round 11: (3 sc, inc) * 6 times. [30 sc]
- Round 12-13: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [30 sc]
- Round 14: (4 sc, inc) * 6 times. [36 sc]
- Round 15-16: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [36 sc]
- Round 17: (5 sc, inc) * 6 times. [42 sc]
- Round 18-19: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [42 sc]
- Round 20: (6 sc, inc) * 6 times. [48 sc]
- Round 21-22: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [48 sc]
- Round 23: (7 sc, inc) * 6 times. [54 sc]
- Round 24: Sc in each stitch around. [54 sc]
- Round 25: Sc in each stitch around, but work this round in the FRONT LOOP ONLY (FLO). This creates a ridge where we will attach the face later. [54 sc]
- Round 26: (8 sc, inc) * 6 times. [60 sc]
- Round 27-28: Sc in each stitch around. (2 rounds) [60 sc]
- Round 29: Switch to white yarn. Work one round in crab stitch (also known as reverse single crochet) around the brim of the hat. This gives a nice textured edge. [60 crab stitches]
Fasten off and weave in ends for the hat. Set aside.
2. Nose (Using skin-colored yarn)
This is a small, cute nose for our gnome. Work in continuous rounds and stuff lightly as you go.
- Round 1: Make 6 sc into a MR. [6 sc]
- Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. [12 sc]
- Round 3: (3 sc, inc) * 3 times. [15 sc]
- Round 4-8: Sc in each stitch around. (5 rounds) [15 sc]
- Round 9: (3 sc, dec) * 3 times. [12 sc]
- Round 10: (Dec) * 6 times. [6 sc]
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using your tapestry needle, thread the tail through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight to close the hole. Weave in the end. Lightly stuff the nose before completely closing.
3. Face (Using skin-colored yarn)
Now, we’ll create the gnome’s face directly onto the hat. Look for the ridge created by the FLO stitches on Round 25 of the hat. We will work into the BACK LOOPS ONLY (BLO) of that round, which are the loops facing inwards on the hat.
- Attach your skin-colored yarn to any BLO of Round 25 of the hat. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), then sc in the same BLO and in each remaining BLO around. This will be your first round for the face. [54 sc]
- Round 1-5: Sc in each stitch around. (5 rounds) [54 sc]
- Round 6: (7 sc, dec) * 6 times. [48 sc]
- Round 7: (6 sc, dec) * 6 times. [42 sc]
- Round 8: (5 sc, dec) * 6 times. [36 sc]
- Round 9: (4 sc, dec) * 6 times. [30 sc]
- Round 10: (3 sc, dec) * 6 times. [24 sc]
- Round 11: (2 sc, dec) * 6 times. [18 sc]
- Round 12: (1 sc, dec) * 6 times. [12 sc]
Start stuffing the face firmly as you continue to decrease. Ensure it’s plump but doesn’t distort the stitches.
- Round 13: (Dec) * 6 times. [6 sc]
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using your tapestry needle, thread the tail through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight to close the hole. Weave in the end.
4. Assembly and Finishing Touches
Now for the fun part โ bringing your gnome to life!
- Attach the Nose: Position the nose in the center of the gnome’s face, slightly below the brim of the hat. Sew it securely in place using the tail you left earlier.
- Add the Eyes: Glue the 8mm half-bead eyes on either side of the nose. Make sure they are level and symmetrically placed. Allow the glue to dry completely.
- Make and Attach Pompom: Create a small pompom using white yarn (or a contrasting color for fun!). You can use a pompom maker or the fork method for small pompoms. Sew it firmly to the very tip of the gnome’s hat.
- Decorate the Hat: Sew a small button (or any other embellishment you like, such as an embroidered star) onto the side of the hat for extra charm.
- Create the Hanging Loop: On the very top of the hat (next to where the pompom is attached), attach a piece of yarn and make a chain of 50 stitches (ch 50). Slip stitch into the base of the chain to form a loop. This will allow you to hang your gnome on your Christmas tree!
