Round 2: Building Texture
Now we add definition.

  1. Ch 1.
  2. In the same stitch as the join: work 1 Single Crochet (Sc), 1 Half Double Crochet (Hdc), and 1 Double Crochet (Dc).
  3. Ch 1.
  4. In the top of the next Tr from Round 1, work 3 Dc. Ch 1.
  5. Repeat from * to * around the circle.
  6. Sl St to the top of the first Sc to join. (The original instructions here become spiral, so a join might be optional if transitioning directly to spiral work. For clarity, I’m including a join before explicitly starting spiral instructions).

Round 3 & Beyond: Spiraling Outwards
Here, we begin the continuous spiral. If you haven’t already, place a stitch marker in the first stitch of this round and move it up as you complete each round.

  1. Into the top of the initial Sc from Round 2: work 2 Dc (this is your increase).
  2. Work 1 Dc into each of the next 2 stitches (the Hdc and Dc from the previous round’s starting cluster).
  3. Ch 1.
  4. Into the first Dc of the next 3-Dc group: work 2 Dc. Work 1 Dc into each of the next 2 Dc. Ch 1.
  5. Repeat from * to * around. Do not join. Simply continue to the next stitch, which is the first stitch of your previous round.
  6. Pattern for Subsequent Spiral Rounds:
    • In the first stitch of each “set” or “cluster” from the previous round, work 2 Dc (increase).
    • Work 1 Dc in each remaining Dc of that set.
    • Ch 1 between each set.

Continue this spiral pattern. Don’t worry if it looks a bit wavy at first; it will flatten out as it grows.

Sizing Your Center
The size of your blanket’s center is up to you!

  • For a large bouquet blanket (as shown in my main example), I made the center about 3 feet across, using roughly 300g of yarn.
  • For a smaller sample or a mini-bouquet, about 50g of yarn for the center will suffice.

Tapering Off & Finishing the Circle
Once your center reaches your desired size, it’s time to create a smooth edge.

  1. A few stitches before your marked beginning of the round: work 1 Hdc into each of the next two stitches.
  2. Work 1 Sc into each of the next two stitches.
  3. Sl St into the Ch-1 space that aligns with your marked beginning of the round.
  4. Ch 1 to secure. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving.
  5. Pull the yarn through and tighten.

Weaving in Those Ends (A Must-Do!)
Securely weave in all yarn tails to keep your work neat and prevent unraveling.

  • Thread a yarn tail onto your yarn needle.
  • On the wrong side of your work, weave the tail through the back of several stitches in one direction.
  • Weave it back in the opposite direction for extra security.
  • Securing the Magic Ring: This one needs special attention. Weave the tail around the central stitches of the ring multiple times in both directions to ensure it stays tightly closed.
