Basketweave Pattern (Rows 1-20)
The blanket uses an “Irish Moss Basketweave” pattern. The instructions below detail the first 20 rows, which form the core repeat of the design.
First Set of Rows (Shifting Pattern Block 1):
These rows create the initial texture of the basketweave.
- 1st row (RS): Sl1Pwyib. K4. *(P1. K1) twice. P1. K5. Rep from * to end of row.
- 2nd row: Sl1Pwyif. P4. *(K1. P1) twice. K1. P5. Rep from * to end of row.
- 3rd row: Sl1Pwyib. K4. *(K1. P1) twice. K6. Rep from * to end of row.
- 4th row: Sl1Pwyif. P4. *(P1. K1) twice. P6. Rep from * to end of row.
- 5th to 10th rows: Repeat rows 1 through 4 once more, then repeat rows 1 and 2 once more. This completes the first 10 rows of the pattern.
Second Set of Rows (Shifting Pattern Block 2):
These rows introduce the shifted basketweave effect, creating the alternating texture.
- 11th row (RS): (P1. K1) twice. P1. *K5. (P1. K1) twice. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
- 12th row: (K1. P1) twice. K1. *P5. (K1. P1) twice. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
- 13th row: (K1. P1) twice. K1. *K6. (P1. K1) twice. Rep from * to end of row.
- 14th row: (P1. K1) twice. P1. *P6. (K1. P1) twice. Rep from * to end of row.
- 15th to 20th rows: Repeat rows 11 through 14 once more, then repeat rows 11 and 12 once more. This completes the full 20-row repeat of the pattern.
Irish Moss Basketweave Pattern Chart
For a visual guide to the stitch pattern, refer to the chart below. This chart illustrates the stitch formation for rows 1 through 20 (or 2 to 20 and 1 to 19 depending on your reading direction, as indicated).

The Irish Moss Basketweave stitch chart, showing the repetition over 20 rows.
Key
Understand the symbols used in the chart to accurately follow the pattern:
- ■ = Knit on Right Side (RS) rows. Purl on Wrong Side (WS) rows.
- □ = Purl on Right Side (RS) rows. Knit on Wrong Side (WS) rows.
- – = Sl1Pwyib (Slip 1 Purl-wise with yarn in back) on Right Side (RS) rows. Sl1Pwyif (Slip 1 Purl-wise with yarn in front) on Wrong Side (WS) rows.
The chart features a 10-stitch repeat, and you should “Start here” at the indicated point for the beginning of the row.
Continuing the Blanket
To achieve the desired blanket length, continue the pattern as follows:
- Repeat the last 20 rows (Rows 1-20 of the Irish Moss Basketweave Pat) one more time.
- After the repeat, work Rows 1 to 10 of the pattern once more.
Finishing
Once you have reached your desired length and completed the final sequence of rows:
- Cast off all stitches securely.
Congratulations! You have completed your Bernat Basket-Weavy Knit Blanket. Enjoy the warmth and texture of your new handmade creation.
