5. Embroidery – Mask Details (Red and Black Yarn)
Use the image as a guide for placement. It’s best to do this before attaching the head to the body.
- Red Markings:
- Using red yarn and your embroidery needle, create the main “X” shape across the face. Start from the upper left side, go across to the lower right, and then from the upper right to the lower left.
- Add the vertical lines. There are two sets of vertical lines on each side of the “X”. They are positioned roughly where eyes would be. Make them slightly thicker than the “X” lines. Refer to the image for spacing and length.
- Black Markings:
- Using black yarn and your embroidery needle, add the thinner vertical lines next to each set of red vertical lines. These are shorter and thinner than the red lines, adding detail to the mask.
Assembly & Finishing:
- Attach Head to Body: Sew the head to the top of the body using the yarn tails and yarn needle. Position it centrally.
- Attach Arms: Sew the arms to the sides of the body, positioning them at a suitable height.
- Dress in Hoodie: Gently put the hoodie onto the doll. The hood should naturally fall back or can be posed up.
- Finishing Touches: Weave in all loose yarn ends securely into the doll parts to hide them. Ensure all parts are firmly stuffed and sewn together. You can adjust stuffing to shape the doll as desired.
Important Notes for 100% Accuracy (and adjustments you can make):
- Yarn and Hook Size: The exact yarn weight and hook size will influence the final size of your doll. If you want a larger or smaller doll, adjust these accordingly, keeping the ratio of yarn weight to hook size consistent for tight stitches.
- Gradient Body: For a more gradual gradient in the body, you can use more shades of gray and transition more slowly over more rounds. Or consider using a self-striping or gradient yarn in gray tones.
- Hoodie Texture: If you want to replicate a slightly looser or textured edge on the hoodie, you could consider:
- Using a slightly larger hook for the hoodie pieces.
- Adding a row of reverse single crochet (crab stitch) or slip stitch around the edges.
- Embroidery is Key: The embroidery is what truly captures the Vessel mask. Take your time with this step and refer closely to the image for placement and thickness of lines. Don’t be afraid to redo sections if you’re not satisfied.
- Proportions: If your doll looks slightly different in proportion, you can adjust the number of rounds in the head, body, or arms in future attempts.
