Cute Cat keychain: free pattern

Approximate finished size: 6–7 cm tall
Style: amigurumi, worked in continuous rounds
Difficulty: easy/intermediate

Materials

  • Light brown/tan yarn
  • Cream/off-white yarn
  • Small amount of black yarn/thread
  • 2 small black safety eyes, about 4–5 mm
  • Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn, roughly 2–2.5 mm
  • Stuffing
  • Keychain clasp + small metal ring
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations

  • MR = magic ring
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in one stitch
  • dec = invisible decrease
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • FO = fasten off
  • BLO = back loop only

1. Body + head

Start at the bottom and work upward.

Brown

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc × 6 (12)
R3: (sc, inc) × 6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) × 6 (30)
R6–R10: 30 sc (30)

The body in the video is fairly wide and rounded rather than cylindrical, so keep the tension slightly loose.

Cream belly begins

Change to cream.

Rather than making the entire round cream, create the front belly panel by carrying the cream across the front while the sides/back remain brown.

A practical reconstruction is:

R11–R17: 30 sc, maintaining the cream section across approximately the central 12–14 stitches of the front.

Then return to brown for the upper head.

R18–R22: 30 sc (30)

2. Shape the head

The head and body are one continuous piece in the video.

R23: (3 sc, dec) × 6 (24)
R24: (2 sc, dec) × 6 (18)

Insert the eyes between approximately R21 and R22, around 7–8 stitches apart.

Stuff firmly, particularly the lower body, but don’t overstuff the head because the original has a soft rounded shape.

R25: (sc, dec) × 6 (12)
R26: dec × 6 (6)

FO, leaving a tail. Close the remaining hole.

3. Ears × 2

The ears are triangular and slightly rounded rather than sharply pointed.

Use brown.

R1: 4 sc in MR (4)
R2: (sc, inc) × 2 (6)
R3: 6 sc
R4: (2 sc, inc) × 2 (8)
R5: 8 sc
R6: (3 sc, inc) × 2 (10)

Don’t stuff heavily.

Flatten the opening and sew the ears onto the head around R20–R23, angled slightly outward.

This positioning is important because the video shows the ears sitting fairly close to the top sides of the head.

4. Front legs × 2

The legs are short, chunky tubes attached directly to the lower front of the body.

Brown

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc × 6 (12)
R3–R6: 12 sc

Add a small amount of stuffing.

Flatten the top and sew onto the lower front of the body.

The paws should extend only slightly below the body’s lowest point.

5. Tail

The tail in the video is relatively short and thick, with a rounded end.

Brown

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2–R5: 6 sc

Add a tiny amount of stuffing.

Sew the tail onto the lower back/side of the body.

The visible tail should remain fairly subtle. The cat’s large rounded body is the dominant silhouette.

6. Face

The face is embroidered after assembly.

Nose

Use black/dark brown thread.

Embroider a tiny inverted-triangle nose approximately in the center of the cream muzzle.

Add a short vertical line underneath.

Mouth

Add two very short diagonal lines beneath the nose to create the cat-mouth shape.

Whiskers

Use dark brown/black thread.

Make approximately 3 short horizontal whiskers on each side.

The whiskers in the reference are deliberately short and understated.

7. Cream muzzle/chest

The reference has a large cream area running from the muzzle down through the chest/belly.

For a cleaner result, I would actually recommend crocheting this as an integrated color section rather than sewing a separate patch.

The cream area should be approximately:

Head: wide around the eyes and muzzle
↓
Neck: continues downward
↓
Chest: widest around the middle
↓
Belly: narrows slightly toward the bottom

This is one of the parts I cannot determine stitch-for-stitch from the rotating finished object, so the exact color-change positions are necessarily an approximation.

8. Keychain attachment

The reference has a metal loop at the very top, between the ears.

A good crochet construction is:

Chain 6, join with a sl st to form a small loop.

Sew the loop firmly into the top of the head, preferably passing the yarn through several stitches rather than attaching it to only one stitch.

Then attach the metal keychain clasp/ring to that loop.

The important proportions

Width: 5.5–6 cm
Body height: 4–4.5 cm
Head/ear section: 2.5–3 cm
Legs: ~1.2 cm
Ears: ~1.5 cm
