What You’ll Need

  • Yarn in yellow, white, orange, and gray (or your preferred colors)
  • Crochet hook (size suitable for your yarn)
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stuffing material
  • 5mm safety eyes (optional: you can embroider them if you prefer)
  • Craft glue
  • Pins

Let’s Get Crocheting!

Body

We’ll begin by creating the main body of our chef chicken. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Round 1: Start with a magic ring (adjustable ring). Work 7 single crochet (sc) into the ring. Pull the ring tight to close it. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch to mark the beginning of the next round.
  2. Round 2: Increase (inc) in each stitch around. (An increase is 2 sc in the same stitch). You should have 14 sc at the end of this round.
  3. Round 3: Repeat [1 sc, 1 inc] 7 times. You will have 21 sc in this round.
  4. Round 4: Repeat [1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc] 7 times. You’ll end up with 28 sc.
  5. Round 5: Repeat [3 sc, 1 inc] 7 times. Now you’ll have 35 sc.
  6. Rounds 6-8: Work 1 sc in each stitch around for 3 rounds. You should maintain 35 sc in each of these rounds.
  7. Round 9: Repeat [2 sc, 1 inc, 2 sc] 7 times. You will have 40 sc.
  8. Rounds 10-15: 1 sc in each stitch around. You will have 40 sc in each of these rounds.
  9. Round 16: Repeat [5 sc, 1 decrease(dec)] 6 times. Use the invisible decrease method for a neater finish (only picking up front loops). You should now have 34 sc.
  10. Round 17: Repeat [4 sc, 1 dec] 6 times. You will have 28 sc.
  11. Rounds 18-20: Continue with slight pattern variations, as shown in the video, decreasing as needed, and also stuffing the body firmly.
  12. Round 21: Make 6 decreases (dec). You’ll have only a few stitches left.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail of yarn. Weave this tail through the front loops only of the remaining stitches to close the opening. Pull the tail tight, thread it back into the center, and weave it through a few stitches to secure. Finally, cut off the excess yarn.

Eyes

For the eyes, we will use safety eyes. Go to round 7, marking 2 points with pins, 4 stitches apart. Glue the safety eyes to these marks. If you’re using yarn, add a white line around them using white yarn for definition. And then, create the mouth by using orange yarn. Take 2 stitches in the middle of the eye section for this.

Hands

To create the hands, count 3 sc behind the eyes and 1 round down. Use this spot as the base for the first hand. Insert your hook 2 stitches below the marked spot and follow these steps:

  1. Chain 4.
  2. In the second chain from the hook, work 1 sc.
  3. In the next chain, work 1 half double crochet (hdc).
  4. In the last chain, work another 1 hdc.
  5. Insert hook into a new stitch below the base and make one slip stitch.
  6. Pull yarn to cut and weave in the end.

Repeat this process for the other hand, inserting your hook right at the marked spot and following the instructions as with the first hand.

Apron

Using white yarn, begin with a slip knot and then create 8 chains. Begin to crochet from the second chain from the hook. Make 1 sc in each chain (7 sc). Rows 2 to 4 are identical; chain 1, turn, and 1 sc into each st (7 sc). After row 4, crochet along the sides, adding 1 sc into each row, totalling 4 sc. In the corner, create 1 increase. Then, add 1 sc into each of the next 5 stitches of the foundation chain. Repeat the increase at the other corner and, complete the right side by adding 4 sc. To finish, begin with the first strap by chaining 30. Then, insert your hook into the top corner of the apron and, chain 30 to make the other strap. Weave in all loose ends.

Hat

Start with a magic ring (adjustable ring).

  1. Round 1: 7 sc into the ring, pull to close.
  2. Round 2: Increase in each stitch around. You should have 14 sc.
  3. Round 3: Repeat [1 sc, 1 inc] 7 times for 21 sc.
  4. Round 4: Make 10 decreases, then 1 sc.
  5. Round 5: Work 1 sc in each stitch around using only the front loops of each stitch (11sc).

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing to the head. Sew the hat on top of the chicken’s head.

Knife

Using grey yarn, make a slip knot and create 9 chains. First, work 1 slip stitch into the second chain from the hook, then 4 more slip stitches. Next, chain 3 and work 1 double crochet into the same stitch as the last slip stitch. Continue with 1 hdc and 1 sc in the following stitches, and then 1 slip stitch in the last chain. Cut the yarn, weaving in any loose ends.

Assembly

To finish, apply some craft glue to the knife and carefully place it under one of the chicken’s hands, securing them together with a pin while drying.
