Important Note: When crocheting this pattern, try to maintain a loose tension. Do not overtighten your stitches for the best result.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • YarnArt Jeans yarn (for the main mitten body, choose your preferred color)
  • Alize Softy yarn (for the fluffy cuff, typically white or a contrasting light color)
  • Crochet Hook 2.5 mm
  • Keychain base (if making a keychain)
  • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and embroidery)
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

Here are the crochet terms used in this pattern:

  • MR: Magic Ring (also known as Magic Circle)
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • inc: Increase (make two single crochets in one stitch)
  • dec: Decrease (single crochet two stitches together)
  • (…) x n: Repeat the instructions in the parentheses ‘n’ times
  • (n): Total number of stitches in the round

Let’s Get Started!

Part 1: The Thumb

Using YarnArt Jeans yarn (or your chosen main color).

  1. Round 1: Make 6 single crochets (sc) into a Magic Ring (MR). (6 stitches)
  2. Round 2: (1 sc, then 1 increase (inc)) repeated 3 times. (9 stitches)
  3. Rounds 3-6: Work 1 sc in each of the 9 stitches around. (9 stitches)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing later. Set the thumb piece aside.

Part 2: The Main Mitten Body

Using YarnArt Jeans yarn (or your chosen main color).

  1. Round 1: Make 6 single crochets (sc) into a Magic Ring (MR). (6 stitches)
  2. Round 2: Work 6 increases (inc). (12 stitches)
  3. Round 3: (1 sc, then 1 inc) repeated 6 times. (18 stitches)
  4. Round 4: (2 sc, then 1 inc) repeated 6 times. (24 stitches)
  5. Round 5: (3 sc, then 1 inc) repeated 6 times. (30 stitches)
  6. Round 6: Work 1 sc in each of the 30 stitches around. (30 stitches)
  7. Round 7: Work 13 sc, then 1 decrease (dec), then 13 sc, then 1 decrease (dec). (28 stitches)
  8. Round 8: Work 12 sc, then 1 decrease (dec), then 12 sc, then 1 decrease (dec). (26 stitches)
  9. Rounds 9-12: Work 1 sc in each of the 26 stitches around. (26 stitches)
  10. Round 13 (Attaching the Thumb): Work 12 sc on the main mitten body. Now, take your thumb piece and place it directly next to your work. You will now make the attachment: Make 2 single crochets by inserting your hook through a stitch on the main body AND a stitch on the thumb simultaneously (this effectively connects 2 stitches from the main body to 2 stitches from the thumb). Next, work 7 sc directly into the remaining stitches of the thumb. Finish the round by working 10 sc into the remaining stitches of the main body. (31 stitches total)
  11. Round 14: Work 12 sc on the main part, then 7 sc on the thumb stitches, then 12 sc on the main part. (31 stitches)
  12. Round 15: Work 15 sc, then 1 decrease (dec), then 14 sc. (30 stitches)
  13. Round 16: Work 14 sc, then 1 decrease (dec), then 13 sc. (29 stitches)
  14. Round 17: Work 13 sc, then 2 decreases (dec) in a row, then 12 sc. (27 stitches)
  15. Round 18: Work 13 sc, then 1 decrease (dec), then 12 sc. (26 stitches)
  16. Round 19: Work 1 sc in each of the 26 stitches around. (26 stitches)

Once Round 19 is complete, gently steam the mitten part to help it take shape. This can make the stitches look more even and the fabric softer.

Part 3: The Cuff (Color Change!)

Now, it’s time to change yarn to Alize Softy yarn (or your chosen fluffy yarn) for the soft cuff!

  1. Rounds 20-23: Work 1 sc in each of the 26 stitches around. (26 stitches)

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends securely.

Final Assembly:

  • Using a tapestry needle and some white yarn (or embroidery floss), carefully embroider a delicate snowflake onto the main body of your mitten. This adds a lovely festive touch!
  • If you’re making a keychain, attach your keychain base to the top loop of the mitten.

Your beautiful New Year’s Mitten souvenir is now complete! We hope you had fun creating this festive little piece. Don’t forget to share your finished project on social media and tag Anna Rubtsova, the talented designer, @ruan_handmade!
