How I Write a Full Sub Plan in 2 Minutes Using AI — Free Template

by Emila Lorein

Substitute Lesson Plan: Grade 5 English

Duration: 60 Minutes

Classroom: [Insert Room Number]

Date: [Insert Date]

1. 60-Minute Schedule

  • 0:00 – 0:10 | Arrival & Warm-up: Attendance and “The Daily Scribble” (see Activities).
  • 0:10 – 0:15 | Intro: Brief explanation of the day’s focus (Creative Writing & Critical Thinking).
  • 0:15 – 0:40 | Main Activity: “The Mystery Box Story” (see Activities).
  • 0:40 – 0:55 | Sharing Circle: Students share their work in small groups or with the class.
  • 0:55 – 1:00 | Clean-up & Wrap-up: Pack away materials and final reflections.

2. Instructions for the Substitute

Welcome! Thank you so much for stepping in today. My students are generally enthusiastic and helpful.

  • Supplies: Everything the students need is in their desks (journals/paper and pencils). No technology or specialized equipment is required for these activities.
  • Helper Students: If you have questions about the routine, feel free to ask [Student Name] or [Student Name]—they are my “Class Ambassadors.”
  • Flexibility: If the writing activity is going exceptionally well, feel free to let them write longer and shorten the sharing time.

3. No-Prep Activities

Activity A: The Daily Scribble (10-min Warm-up)

Write this prompt on the board: “You wake up and realize you can understand exactly what your pet (or a local squirrel) is thinking. What is the first thing they say to you?”

  • Goal: Get students writing immediately to settle the energy.
  • Action: Students write for 5-7 minutes in their journals. No “wrong” answers!

Activity B: The Mystery Box Story (25-min Main Task)

Ask students to draw a medium-sized square (The Box) in the middle of their paper. Inside the box, they must write three random nouns (e.g., A rusty key, a slice of pizza, a map of Mars).

  • Task: They must write a short story where all three items in the “box” play a crucial role in the plot.
  • Challenge: The story must end with a cliffhanger.

4. Behaviour Management Note

I use a “Positive Points” system.

  • The Goal: If the class works quietly and stays on task, they earn a “Class Point” toward a future reward.
  • The Signal: If the room gets too loud, I usually use a simple “Give Me Five” (hand in the air) to signal silence.
  • Individual Support: If a student is struggling to focus, please ask them to move to the “Focus Desk” near the window for 5 minutes of quiet reflection time.

5. Closing Note for the Sub

Please leave me a quick note at the end of the day letting me know how far the students got and if there were any “superstar” moments. I hope you have a wonderful hour with this group!

Emergency “Extra Time” Idea: If you finish early, play a quick game of “Categories.” Pick a category (e.g., Adjectives, Authors, or Verbs). Students must name one that hasn’t been said until only one person is left standing.
