Materials Needed

Before we begin, gather your supplies:

  • Main Yarn: “Krokha” (lot 0383) or a similar medium-weight brown yarn
  • Crochet Hook: 3 mm
  • Felt: Red, White (for the mouth and teeth)
  • Adhesive: Super Glue (or strong fabric glue)
  • Eyes: Safety eyes (or buttons) 10mm
  • Tools: Needle (for sewing parts)

Finished Size: Your completed Domo Kun will stand approximately 13 cm in height.

Pattern Instructions

Legs & Body (one continuous piece)

First Leg:

  • R1: 6 SC into MR (6)
  • R2: 6 Inc (12)
  • R3: (1 SC, Inc) x6 (18)
  • R4: 18 SC in BLO (18)
  • R5-8: 18 SC (18)

Fasten off the yarn for the first leg.

Second Leg:

Crochet the second leg following the same principle as the first leg.

Do not cut the yarn after finishing R8 of the second leg.

Joining Legs & Beginning Body:

Now, we’ll connect the two legs to form the body.

  • R9: From the second leg, CH 2. Join to the first leg and continue crocheting in a round:
    • 18 SC along the first leg.
    • 2 SC along the chain stitches (between the legs).
    • 18 SC along the second leg.
    • 2 SC along the other side of the chain stitches (between the legs).
    • (Total 40 SC in this round)
  • R10-29: 40 SC (40)

Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Strip / Mouth Panel (make 1)

This piece will form the base for Domo Kun’s iconic mouth.

  • Chain 17 CH.
  • Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, crochet 16 SC.
  • Continue crocheting 16 SC per row for a total of 8 rows. (Remember to CH 1 and turn at the end of each row, if working in rows).

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Arms (make 2)

We’ll now create Domo Kun’s adorable little arms.

  • R1: 6 SC into MR (6)
  • R2: 6 Inc (12)
  • R3: (3 SC, Inc) x3 (15)
  • R4-5: 15 SC (15)
  • R6: (3 SC, Dec) x3 (12)
  • R7: 1 Dec, 8 SC, 1 SC (10) (Note: This should result in 10 stitches. A common way to reduce 12 to 10 is (4 SC, Dec) x2 or Dec, 10 SC)
  • R8-14: 10 SC (10)

Fold the piece in half and single crochet through both layers to close the opening (flatten the arm).

Leave a long tail for sewing.

Crochet the second arm similarly.

Assembly

Now for the exciting part – bringing all the pieces together to form your Domo Kun!

  1. Jaw: From felt, cut out Domo Kun’s jaw. Glue the teeth (cut from white felt) onto the red felt base of the jaw.
  2. Attach Jaw: Glue the felt jaw to the front of the crocheted body (you can also neatly sew it along the edges for extra security).
  3. Jaw Border: Take the main yarn and crochet a square border around the felt jaw. The border should be 2 rows thick.
  4. Eyes: Sew on the 10mm safety eyes.
  5. Arms: Sew the arms onto the body. Count down from the top of the body to find the appropriate row for arm placement.
