Pattern Instructions

Porthole (Spacesuit Window)

Use your 4mm hook and plush yarn. The porthole is worked in an oval shape around a starting chain.

Crocheting the porthole for the cosmonaut
  1. Start with a chain of 6 CH. Beginning in the 2nd chain from the hook, crochet around both sides of the chain: 4 sc, 3 sc in the last chain. Now, working on the opposite side of the chain: 3 sc, inc. (12)
  2. Inc, 3 sc, 3 inc, 3 sc, 2 inc. (18)
  3. Work 18 sc all around, then finish with a sl st.

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using white yarn or embroidery floss, stitch a few small “highlights” onto the porthole to make it look like glass.

Backpack

Use your 4mm hook and plush yarn.

Crocheting the backpack for the cosmonaut
  1. Rounds 1-2: Follow the same instructions as the Porthole for Rounds 1 and 2. You will have 18 stitches.
  2. Rounds 3-6: SC in each stitch around for 4 rows. (18)
  3. Round 7: Dec, 3 sc, 3 dec, 3 sc, 2 dec. (12)

Finish with a sl st. Lightly stuff the backpack with filler. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and sew the remaining hole closed. Set aside for assembly.

Legs & Body (All in one piece)

Use your 4mm hook and plush yarn. You will make two legs and then join them to form the body.

Second Leg & Joining

    • 12 sc around the second leg.

Finish with a sl st. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 20cm). Weave the tail through the final stitches and pull to close, but don’t weave in the end yet.

Attaching the Wire

  1. Cut a piece of thin wire to your desired antenna length. Fold it in half.
  2. Insert the folded end into the bottom of the heart. Secure it by sewing it to the top inside of the heart with a separate piece of thread.
  3. Tightly wrap the remaining long yarn tail from the heart down the length of the wire to cover it completely.

Toy Assembly

It’s time to bring your cosmonaut to life!

Assembling the cosmonaut by sewing on the porthole and backpack
  1. Porthole: Using the long tail you left, sew the porthole to the front of the body, positioning it between rounds 12 and 18.
  2. Backpack: Sew the backpack onto the back, centered between rounds 9 and 15.
  3. Heart Antenna: Carefully insert the wire end of the heart into the top of the cosmonaut’s head where you closed the final round. Push it in securely.

You’re All Done!

Congratulations on creating your very own Heart Cosmonaut! We hope you had a blast making this little space explorer.
