Pattern Variations: Three Sizes, Endless Possibilities

One of the best features of this versatile crochet heart pattern is its adaptability. With a single set of instructions, you can craft three distinct heart sizes:

  • Mini Heart: Perfect for tiny embellishments, confetti, or earrings.
  • Medium Heart: Ideal for gift tags, keychains, or adding to cards.
  • Large Heart: Great for appliqués on blankets, hats, or creating a statement garland.

Simply choose to stop after Round 1 for a mini heart, after Round 2 for a medium-size heart, or complete all three rounds for a charming large crochet heart. You can also experiment with different yarn weights and hook sizes to achieve even more variation!

Stuffed Crochet Heart Option

Want a plush, squishy heart? Easily transform your flat hearts into puffy delights! Simply crochet two hearts using this crochet heart pattern, then stitch them together around the edges, leaving a small opening. Stuff gently with a bit of poly-fill, and then close the opening. Voila – a plump, adorable stuffed heart!

Your Go-To Crochet Heart Pattern (The Details)

While many crochet patterns exist, we believe our method offers the most satisfying and visually appealing results. Here’s how to crochet a heart, step by step, with all the essential information you need.

  • Difficulty: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate
  • Finished Size (Large): Approximately 3.25″ wide and 3″ tall, using worsted weight yarn and a 5.0 mm hook.
  • Gauge: Gauge is not crucial for the success of this project, offering great flexibility. However, for a denser, more solid heart without gaps, we recommend using a hook one or two sizes smaller than suggested on your yarn package. This helps create a stiffer, more polished finish.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn is highly recommended for best results.
  • Hook: H (5.0mm) crochet hook (or size to achieve your desired density).
  • Essential Tools: Yarn needle (find our favorite tools here), stitch markers (optional, but helpful!), scissors.

Stitches and Abbreviations You’ll Master

This pattern uses standard US crochet terminology. If you’re new to any of these stitches, don’t worry! We have detailed tutorials to guide you:

Important Pattern Notes

  • This crochet heart pattern is written in US terminology.
  • The heart is worked in rounds.

Step-by-Step Crochet Heart Pattern Instructions

1. Getting Started: The Magic Ring

Begin your heart with a magic ring (also known as a magic circle or adjustable ring). This technique creates a tight, neat center for your heart. If you need a quick refresher, click for our detailed tutorial on How to Crochet a Magic Ring.

2. Round 1: The Foundation (Mini Heart Option)

Ch 2. Into the magic ring, make 3 tr, 4 dc, tr, 4 dc, 3 tr. Ch 2, and sl st into magic ring.

Carefully pull the yarn end to close the magic ring tightly.

Note: You can stop here if you desire a perfectly mini crochet heart! This makes a charming tiny heart, ideal for delicate embellishments.

3. Round 2: Building the Shape (Medium Heart Option)

Continue in joined rounds, working into the stitches of the previous round.

Sc in ch-2 sp, (2 hdc and 1 dc) in next st, 3 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts, (dc, tr, dc) in next st, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, (1 dc and 2 hdc) in next st, sc in ch-2 sp, sl st in sl st from the previous rnd.

Where is the ch-2 sp? You’ll start Round 2 by working directly into the chain-2 space formed by the ch 2 you made at the beginning of Round 1. You’ll finish the round in the same manner, working into the chain-2 space you created at the end of Round 1. Both of these chain spaces lie neatly alongside their neighboring treble crochet stitches, making them easy to locate.

Note: For a delightful medium-size heart, you can stop here!

4. Round 3: The Full Heart (Large Heart Option)

Continue working in the round to complete your large heart.

Sc in first 2 sts. (2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st) three times, sc in next 6 sts, (sc, hdc, sc) in next st, sc in next 6 sts, (1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st) three times, sc in next 2 sts.

Cut yarn and prepare for an invisible join.

Before finishing, tighten up the magic ring one more time to ensure a beautifully closed center, then proceed to weave in the ends.

Finishing Touches: The Invisible Join

To give your crochet heart a seamless, professional finish, we recommend using an invisible join instead of a traditional slip-stitch join at the end of Round 3. This technique mimics the look of a regular stitch, making your join practically undetectable.

How to Make an Invisible Join:

  1. Prepare Yarn: Cut your yarn, leaving a 6″ tail. Pull the yarn completely through your last stitch.
  2. Thread Needle: Use the yarn tail to thread a tapestry needle.
  3. First Stitch: Insert your needle under both top loops of the first stitch of the previous round. Pull snug, but not too tight.
  4. Last Stitch: Insert your needle down into the center of the top of the last stitch of your current round. Poke the needle down between the two top loops, creating a bridge that completes the stitch.
  5. Secure: Pull the yarn tail snug so that the invisible join matches the size and tension of the surrounding stitches.

Once joined, you can then weave in your ends as you normally would, securing them neatly within your heart.
